Abstract

There are several minimally invasive methods to diagnose diseases of the lacrimal system. In the past ultrasound was rarely used, because of comparatively poor resolution, the limited influence on clinical treatment and the necessity of highly experienced investigator. It was hardly possible to find the lacrimal canaliculi.
The practical value of high resolution ultrasound (20MHz) in the study of lacrimal canaliculi has been proven. It can also be used in the clinical diagnosis of chronic canaliculitis if classical symptoms are absent without any side effects.
Ultrasound is a valuable and simple method performed as an outpatient procedure to assess fistula size after the DCR operation. It shows that a marked reduction of fistula area occur 6 months postoperative.
Ultrasound is used successfully in the diagnosis of anatomical disorders, inflammation, and tumours of the lacrimal sac and surrounding tissues in a simple, quick, and inexpensive method without exposure to radiation or use of contrast medium.
