Abstract

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after mastectomy, or later. Significant psychological, social and sexual morbidity may follow mastectomy for treatment of breast cancer. This morbidity is caused by the realization that the patient has a life threatening disease together with body image disturbance following mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can reduce the distress of mutilating surgery (Ahmed et al., 2005).
Immediate reconstruction can be proposed safely to patient with in situ carcinoma. It can also be proposed after prophylactic mastectomy in case of presence of family history with gene mutation (Sultan et al., 1997).
Patients with clinical stage-I breast cancer are considered to be candidates for immediate breast reconstruction using any of the available approaches (Taylor et al., 2005).
Patients with clinical stage-II breast cancer are borderline. It may be preferable to perform delayed reconstruction, or to use a delayed-immediate approach (Kronowitz et al., 2005).
