Abstract One factor influencing the outcome of care may be nursing staff’s experience of organizational work climate (Norbergh et al., 2002). Staff nurses can be empowered at all levels of the organization, if management allows them the support, encouragement and the organizational climate that encourages and rewards them (McVey, 2004).Aims of this study were: to compare organizational climate in specialty units at Shebine EL-kom University Hospitals and Shebine EL-kom Teaching Hospitals, to compare empowerment of nurses in specialty units at Shebine El- Kom University hospitals and Shebine El-kom Teaching hospital, and to study the relationship between organizational climate and empowerment of nurses in specialty units at Shebine EL-kom University Hospitals and Shebine EL-kom Teaching Hospitals.This study was conducted at 6 specialty units at Shebine El-Kom University Hospital and Shebine El-Kom Teaching Hospital. Descriptive comparative research design was used. Data were collected from 164 diploma school staff nurses using two tools. First: Situational Outlook Questionnaire (Isaksen et al., 2000-2001) to assess organizational climate. Second: Psychological Empowerment in The Workplace Questionnaire (Spreitizer, 1995) to assess nurse’s empowermentThe findings of this study revealed that:there is no statistical significant difference could be detected between the two hospitals in the level of organizational climate. Shebine El-Kom Teaching Hospital has higher mean scores regarding organizational climate than Shebine El-Kom University Hospital. The highest percentage of nurses was observed at the moderate level of organizational climate at both hospitals.There were statistical significant difference between Shebine El-Kom Teaching Hospital and Shebine El-Kom University Hospital regarding nurses` levels of empowerment. Shebine El-Kom Teaching Hospital has higher mean scores regarding nurses` levels of empowerment than Shebine El-Kom University Hospital. The majority of nurses have moderate levels of empowerment in both hospitals.There were a statistical significant positive correlation between organizational climate and nurse’s empowerment. It is recommended that: staff development program for nurse managers to integrate staff nurses in decision making and to deal effectively with new ideas to promote organizational climate and empowerment of nurses. |
