Abstract

In a prospective study including 100 consecutive catheterized patients in medical intensive care unit, the following variables were analysed as possible risk factors for catheter – associated bacteriuria, defined as: age, sex, duration of catheterisation, diabetes mellitus, and prior systemic antibiotic exposure during hospitalization.
Only 73 patients had different clinical symptoms out of them 67 (91.78%) were unimicrobial and 6 (8.22%) were polymicrobial (two species). The other 27 samples showed no growth.
The number of diabetic patients (53) were more than non-diabetic patients (47). On the other hand number of male patients versus female ration was 47/53. Among patients used catheter (3-10) days they were higher than patients used catheter more than 10 days.
Age >50 years old showed, a risky factor for CAUTI with all isolated organisms and polymicrobial cultures (two species) than <50 years old.
All isolates were identified by biochemical tests and confirmed by using API 20. The bacterial isolates were examined for antibiotic sensitivity against four antimicrobial agents representing three different groups. The antibiotic susceptibility data of the studied isolates, were observed as in order: Amikin > Garamycin > Calfuran > Unasyn.
Results indicated that coated catheter with combined antibiotics has the most potent bactericidal activity against most of isolated organisms compared with single antibiotics.
