Abstract

Numerous factors, including loss of nerve substance, delay in operative repair, and severe concomitant injuries, may preclude early primary repair. In these instances, autogenous nerve grafting has been an effective means of repair and reconstruction in overcoming the neural gap.
Harvesting a donor nerve graft, however, can have significant morbidity and consequence, as it can be associated with scarring at the donor site, neuroma formation, and loss of donor site function. As such, it remains a challenge to develop alternative methods towards managing peripheral nerve injuries which are not amenable to the “gold standard” primary tensionless epineural repair .
