Abstract

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (morning sickness) occur in 50% to 90% of all women in the first trimester. The typical onset is between 4 and 8 weeks of gestation with symptoms continuing until 14-16 weeks.1-4 The condition is generally self-limited with symptoms most common and troublesome in early pregnancy and abating by the end of the first trimester. For some women, the symptomatic period is severe and may lead to dehydration, weight loss, and acidosis. Even when the condition is not so severe, symptoms can cause considerable distress and temporary disability. Nearly 50% of employed women believe their work efficiency is reduced by this problem and as many as 25% require time off from work.5
