Abstract

The research adopts the concept of sustainable tourism development as an approach for developing Alamain sector located west of Alexandria city in Matrouh governorate, in order to achieve a sustained development in this area. The main aim required to achieve is attracting permanent international tourism through out the whole year and creating a sustainable tourism and urban community. This aim reflects the governmental strategy towards the first decade of the twenty one century. The strategy of the former approach is based on attracting people from the nearest governorates to form a new urban community. Through the participation of the local community, the expected international tourists are served by the new urban community.
‎The research methodology comprises three basic steps.
‎Step 1: Reviewing literature of globalization and sustainable tourism development including its concept and strategy of its application and evaluation.
‎Step2: Propose a checklist for evaluating the performance of international resort development in the term of sustainability, according to this checklist the research will discuss and assess
• ‎International resort development round the world and in the Mediterranean
‎region.
• ‎National Egyptian experience in international tourism development. • Regional Egyptian experience of tourism development in NWC.
‎Step3: Applying Strategic Planning Model for sustainable tourism development at Alamain sector based upon planning criteria and guiding principles of sustainable tourism development.
‎The main contribution of the research is that it addresses the role of developing international tourism based upon sustainability concepts and strategies to achieve objectives of sustainable development of the community and implement the level of development in the hinterlands that corresponds to levels of protection desired. Within this understanding and in more details the research presents the approach that not only deals with ”Sustainable Development Concept” from a theoretical point of view but also introduces the methodology of applying it successfully. The research presents a positive conductive model for practical application of sustainable development in one of the promising tourism destination in NWC. This model can be applied in other locations that desire to achieve sustainable development to its community with respect to distinctive character of the local community and surrounding environment and criteria of sustainability as a regulator for the development.
‎The approach of the research reflects the desired image of sustainable tourism development at the global level by encouraging long term perspective strategy which aims at achieving sustainable benefits from various aspects. At global level, applying the new strategic planning process will ensure that tourist destinations become a renewable resource at each stage of its life cycle and each development phase. At local level, it will enable Egypt to preserve its natural and tourism resources that could not be compensated, and at the same time, attracting international tourism and international investments which in turn will preserve the foreign currency and create additional job opportunities that attract people from the Valley of the Nile and Delta to settle permanently and forming sustainable communities in the hinterland.
