Abstract

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common problems requiring emergency surgery. It has been estimated that the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis is only between 75-90 percent. Thus, accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis is still difficult. The present study included evaluation of the role of C-reactive protein and TLC in diagnosis of acute appendicitis. It was found that if total leucocytic count and neutrophils and C-reactive protein were high the diagnostic accuracy of acute appendicitis was more increased in contrast to depending on single item and if CRP is negative the likehood of appendicitis is very small in patients with suspected acute appendicitis and is most likely associated with normal appendix differing surgery in this group of patients would probably reduce the rate of unnecessary appendectomies and one should look for other causes of right lower quadrant abdominal pain.
