Abstract

The main objective of the work reported in this thesis is saving fresh water for drinkin cleaning and washing especially for passenger ships because the fresh water consumpt in this type of ships is very high compared with other types of ships.
‎The main idea for proposed fresh water generator is using the waste heat recovery fron scavenging air to heat sea water which evaporate under vacuum converting to steam, a condensation the steam convert to fresh water. By using this system the overall therma efficiency for diesel engine will increase, the voyage cost will decrease and the dead weight for the ship will increase.
‎The fIrst chapter is concerned with diesel engine heat balance, Parartteters of waste hea recovery and using the proposed fresh water generator to save the’iresh water requirem on board ships specially passenger ship.
‎The work commences in the second chapter by surveying and comp~s #le various ty of marine diesel engines, specially production of electronic engine which produced by MAN B&W and Sulzer, and the difference between conventional engioe;8f;ldeiectronic engine for different types.
‎The third chapter is concerned with shedding light of exhaust gases and being considere the major contributor to engine energy losses. And also is concerned with steam pt’UdUCI parameters as well as steam applications in heating purposes, a:na.eIectricai power generation. Nevertheless, the different flow systems of waste heat recovery elements adaptable to engine characteristic and ship demands are di~cussed. Additionally, economical study and operating cost in case of using waste heat’ recovery n-om exhaust j system and without using waste heat recovery from exhaust gas system.
‎In what concerns the fourth chapter, it deals with the potential for heat tecOvery from tht cooling system with emphasis on the jacket fresh water cooling system. V8rlous applications for the utilization of recoverable heat are investigated.
‎Emphatic paRicular concentration is placed on the fresh water generator.
‎The fIfth chapter is concerned with, the potential for heat recovery from the turbocharger scavenging air heat that flows through the air cooler. Various applications for the utilization of recoverable heat are investigated. The modem application is the proposed fresh water generator, additionally, an illustration of proposed fresh water generator evaporator and condenser design. And economical study is illustrated.
‎The sixth chapter concentrates on calculating efficiency for different types• of marine dies engine, at different load condition, the aim being the determination of the engine performance, the different ratios for the heat losses.
‎Lastly, chlWter seven is concerned with, the propulsion economy especially voyage costs and effect of reducing specifIc fuel consumption in voyage costs and also effect of installing proposed fresh water generator in ship economy, additionally, the range of us in, proposed fresh water generator, the effect of engine room temperature and sea water temperature in the quantity of fresh water generated.
