Abstract Airway remodeling points to anatomical and/or histological changes of the airways caused by variety of etiological factors (Homer and Elias, 2000) In last few decades, great advances in dealing with prematures, very low birth weight infants and infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), resulted in decreasing mortality rate in these populations, increase in variety of morbidities related to inadaptation to extrauterine environment and/or complications of different measures involved in treatment and increased incidence of residual handicaps (Bhutta and Yusuf, 1997) Now in postsurfactant era, survivors who may show different variety of morbidities are increasing in this population. Among these morbidities, are the histopath-ological changes of the respiratory tract airways. Attention has to be paid to study these morbidities trying to prevent them or at least improve the quality of life in survivors (Hein and Lofgren, 1999) |
