In recent years, the use of power electronic equipments has increased greatly. nonlinear loads, these equipments draw harmonic currents from the network. This lead: a power quality problem and affects the operation of motors, control equipments ~ protection devices. Harmonics can also cause resonance in the electrical netwe Conventionally, passive filters were used to solve these problems but they have me problems such as the fixed compensation, the dependence on network impedence, possibility of causing resonance and the large size. The development of active power filt, has put an end to all these problems. Active power filters use controlled semiconduc switches to compensate harmonics and reactive power. They have the advantage dynamic compensation which is very important taking into account the dynamic nature network topology. This thesis discusses the operation of active power filters using t different: control strategies. The use of fuzzy logic and neural networks in the control active power filters is developed. Special modes of operation are studied such as the use active power filters in motor drives and in four wire systems. A new least squar parameter estimation technique is developed for the calculation of reference currents. Tl simulation results are given for all control techniques. The thesis proposes the practic implementation of a single phase active power filter. The experimental results are includf to validate the proposed filter.
