Abstract

Ecotourism as a new tourist trend started unknown by the Egyptian government in the Sinai region when progressive travelers were searching for natural environmental integrity. While traditional tourism to Egypt’s rich and diversified cultural and historic eras has always been a soaked and serviced industry as it is considered a major sector of the Egyptian economy.
However, Ecotourism is more than just a simple definition. It can also be viewed as a philosophy - a way of redefining the way in which traditional tourism operates. This is a movement towards a new branch of tourism which places value on education of its participants. and brings about an awareness of the environment in which it takes place.
The Gulf of Aqaba is considered a version territory with its undeveloped and relatively unspoiled coasts. It contains enormous ecotourism potentials, which should be appropriately controlled. This tourism development zone stretches from Ras Mohammed at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, along the western coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. to Taba in the north. The area of the Gulf of Aqaba was taken as a case study area for this thesis, as it was given a high priority for tourist development zones by the government. Its natural boundaries forming a scenic value, its historic sites, its rich archives of geological ridges and ecosystem, as well as a moderate climate all year round could draw attention to this particular region as a natural magnet of ecotourism not only in Egypt, but also a world wide unique destination. It is still noted that ecotourism has not been sufficiently studied and its potentials in the Gulf of Aqaba region are not yet discovered.
This study aim at providing a comprehensive understanding g and guidelines of ecotourism, it’s component and profile. The research included field visits and data gathering for the south of Sinai region, within the last two years, are concluded by ecotourism sustainable development guidelines. Final recommendations are reached to draw further attention to the essential need for a new architectural approach in handling the design of new touristic sites and protecting the ecology as a major asset for future development of the ecotourism industry.
