Abstract

Recent developments en the field of power electrics offer a new generation of high power electronic devices such as thyristors OTO., SCRa etc. Utilization of this new generation of power electronic devices in power systems offers significant improvements in the transmission capability of the existing system. Since the power transfer capably of a network is dirtily related to the impedance of ib. network it Is entirety possible to derange the power transfer capability of thc network by changing the impedance of the network The use of power electronic devices facilitates ibis action The use of power electronic devices in AC power systems with the intention of improving the power transfer capability of the syitem forms the basis of the concept of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) FACTS basically induces the use of power electronic devices us the control of series capacitors (Advanced Series Compensator, ASC), advanced static VAR Compensator and phase shifter transformer, While the use of FACTS controllers aids in the power transfer capacity and control of the power system, certain other problems emerge in the field of power system protection. To have such a device in die Uannmsnon lines it requires a new protection scheme to account for the changes introduced by the presence of this device In this thesis the noise signals associated with faults on traninussiost lines employing Advanced Series compensation are descended and characterized. A protection scheme ii developed for such uansnùsnon limes The scheme uses Caiman filtenjig and the adaptive Kaman filtering techniques The thesis is composed of sax chapters: Chapter I contains the introduction and review of moat famous digital relaying algonthms trued for Transmission lines protection Chapter 2 descnbes the Advanced Series Compensated transmission line, the different modes of opcratLon of the ASC are described and explained. A snatbenwicai analysis of the ASC is introduced.
