Abstract

Glaucomas are a group of potentially blinding ocular conditions. Because the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment are so varied, there is no single definition that adequately encompasses all forms (Kanski JJ. 2004). Glaucomas are traditionally classified as congenital (developmental) and acquired. Further subclassification into open-angle and angle-closure based on the mechanism by which aqueous outflow is impaired. The glaucoma may also be primary or secondary depending on the presence or absence of associated factors contributing to the pressure rise. Primary open-angle glaucoma, also referred as simple chronic glaucoma, characterized by insidious onset, normal appearance of an open-angle, glaucomatous optic nerve head damage, visual field loss, and an intra ocular pressure above 21 mmHg at some point of the course of the disease (Berker and Shaeffer 1999).
