Abstract

This study handles the phenomenon of squatter settlement and its impacts upon the urban environment in Alexandria. Squatter settlements often grow on the city boundaries without any previous planning or future expectations. As they expand and have more population, their human needs and demands increase, and as these settlements always rise missing the enough amount of utilities and public services so they either still suffer from this deficiency or parasite upon the available services of the adjacent areas causing additional overloading. So, the aim of work is to evaluate the extent of deficiency in public services in a squatter area and to monitor the change in social character of the city due to the existence of squatters. This evaluation helps in determining the basic needs of public services in the area to upgrade its environmental conditions.
The study is based on the comparison approach as two types of comparisons were carried out:
1. Comparisons between the available standards of public services existing in the study area and the ideal planning standards of these services to evaluate the deficiencies in public services, this step required currying out a public services survey in the study area.
2. Comparisons between population characteristics in the study area extracted from the household survey and the results of Census data of Alexandria to monitor the change in social attributes in the study area.
The study consists of three parts and nine chapters. Part one includes four chapters, chapter one defines the different meaning of squatter settlements and displays the different types of housing:
