Abstract

Ventilated premature babies are at risk of developing chronic lung disease of prematurity (bronchopulmonary dysplasia). Babies who develop chronic lung disease go on to have a higher rate of respiratory problems in later life and also have a higher incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders (Fare, 1997).
The chronic lung disorder may affect infants exposed to high levels of oxygen therapy or who have been on a ventilator for extended periods of time. It is more common among premature infants whose lungs have not fully developed at the time of birth. Chronic lung disease is present, if the neonate is oxygen Ventilated premature babies are at risk of developing chronic lung disease of prematurity (bronchopulmonary dysplasia).
