المستخلص The main problem of the present study is the existence of high marketing losses of cereal crops, particularly in wheat and rice . The problem is enhanced due to the lack of accouyate data concerning quantity and cause of these losses . The study is concerned with wheat and rice losses , the first as a strategic imported crop ,and the second as an important exported crop . Despite the efforts made by the government to increase agricultural production through vertical and horizontal expansion, efforts to decrease losses have not given enough attention .It is the objective of this study to assess marketing losses in wheat and rice ,in additional to the determination of causes of such losses in order to put some suggestion to decrease these losses, The study depends on both descriptive and quantitative approaches to achieve the above objectives . In addition to secondary data ,the study depends heavily on primary data of a sample of various means of transportation and storage for wheat and rice . The study consists of five chapters, the first presents a theoretical framework of the study in three sections .The first section present important concepts on agricultural losses during pre and post harvest . Causes of losses were also reviewed . Such causes include insects ,pesticides ,rodents and birds, .social and cultural factors are also mentioned . The second section of the chapter reviewed various means of transportation, road transports came first as mean of transportation used for wheat and rice . Public sector, cooperatives and private sectors perform such service . Railway is also another mean of transport , despite a decrease of its sale, 5% during nineties to 3% in 2003 The third mean of transport is the river Nile and its branches, and despite the low cost of this mean but it is characterized with time consumption ,and its Slowlines . The third section of the first chapter deals with wheat and rice Storage, various storage systems were reviewed such as open storage , barns, shuna Silos ,etc. The second chapter reviewed previous work on cereal losses. Global and local works were reviewed .The revisions reveal that such studies used mainly subjective assessments. It is also noticed that such assessments differ from a study to another and sometimes for the same crop and stage . |
