Abstract Obesity has become a worldwide problem of epidemic proportion. It affects every organ system and is associated with many chronic medical problems as cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and renal systems. In addition to mentioned risks obese patients have increased incidence of postoperative DVT and PE (Erikson et al., 1997). Many attempts to decrease the perioperative incidence of deep venous thrombosis were included such as: prophylactic dose of heparin, decrease venous stasis in lower limbs by massage and pneumatic leg compression, early ambulation, new reports revealed that hydroxy ethyl starch reduces blood coagulation (Saner et al., 2003). HES induce platelet dysfunction similar to the one observed in Von Willebrand,s disease type I i.e decrease factor VIII and Vwf. Also it decreases GpIIb-IIIa expression on agonist-activated platelets, this phenomenon has been attributed to a modification of platelet cytoplasmic membrane structure by inhibition of conformational activation of GpIIb-IIIa complex (Kozek Laugenecker, 2005). |
