Abstract A pesticide is defined as any substance or a mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating a pest. Pesticide is a general classification and include a variety of chemicals with different uses. Pesticidal chemicals have the capability of destroying life of some form. The organisms against which they are directed are deemed to be undesirable by the person or society that applies them. There is a great difference in pesticides types of action and primary target tissues as there is diversity in their chemistry and physicochemical properties (Murphy, 1980). Toxicologic evaluations of the hazards of handling and use of pesticides have for many years focused primarily on preventing injury to man. Common laboratory animals have served as the experimental models for man’s bio¬chemical, physiologic, and pathologic responces to these chemicals (Murphy,1980) . There are large numbers of pesti¬cides whose acute toxicity is manifested through functional or biochemical action in the central and peripheral nervous systems, but there are others in which nervous system involvement does not occur. In the case of few compounds, occupational exposures have resulted in chronic or persis¬tent neurologic disease states (Hayes,1969). Also, acute poisonings by pesticides occur. They are usually the results of occupational exposures or of earless use, or mishandling. |
