Abstract

Abnormal uterine bleeding is a common problem of perimenopausal & postmenopausal women. The causes are variable, ranging from simple dysfunctional uterine bleeding without any organic cause to endometrial cancer. For the evaluation of this condition, invasive procedures such as hysteroscopy & curettage are commonly used.
As a non invasive procedure for evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding, transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) plays an important role as the initial modality however it has several limitations especially when it comes to evaluation of intracavitary abnormalities. It does not allow a clear differentiation between endometrial polyps and hyperplasia and abnormal endometrial growths.
TVS also has a problem in distinguishing submucosal fibroids from those that are intramural, also the exact location of polyps or growths can not be made on (TVS) however sonohysterography (SHG), which involve intrauterine instillation of sterile saline solution under continuous sonographic guidance, when combined with TVS has improved the sensitivity of ultrasound in detection and localization of the lesions.
