Abstract

The anesthetic vapors potentiate neuromuscular blockade in a dose-related fashion. The older halogenated agents; halothane, and isoflurane may take 2 hours or more to equilibrate with muscle, so in practice the potentiating effect of these vapors might not be immediately apparent. At similar MAC, the newer agent sevoflurane equilibrate more rapidly with muscle, but the effect may be measurable only after 30 minutes or more.
Cisatracurium is the only neuromuscular blocker that is both free of histamine-releasing properties and that undergoes organ-independent hoffmann elimination.
This study was designed to quantify the effect of equipotent concentrations (1 MAC) of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane on neuromuscular blockade of cisatracurium besylate; onset, course, duration and recovery. Also, to differentiate between haemodynamic effects induced by the three inhalation anesthetics.
