Abstract

The likely course of ovarian cancer is predicted using prognostic factors. The only universally accepted prognostic factors for patients with ovarian cancer are staging and volume of residual disease (in advanced stage patients). Other factors that may be important but about which there is continued debate include patient age, histopathologic grade, and DNA ploidy. Many other putative prognostic factors have been reported, Peritoneal Fluid Cytology and CA125 but the data are still considered preliminary. (3-6)
Ovarian cancer usually has a poor prognosis. It is disproportionately deadly because it lacks any clear early detection or screening test, meaning that most cases are not diagnosed until they have reached advanced stages. More than 60% of patients presenting with this cancer already have stage III or stage IV cancer, when it has already spread beyond the ovaries. (3-6)
The five-year survival rate for all stages of ovarian cancer is 45.5%. For cases where a diagnosis is made early in the disease, when the cancer is still confined to the primary site, the five-year survival rate is 92.7%. (3-6)
Germ cell tumors of the ovary have a much better prognosis than other ovarian
