Abstract

By the end of the twenty century, emerging technologies have invaded cities, towns and homes, the information and digital technologies, and droved communities in their transformation to the information age. These new communication technologies, by overcoming space and time limitations, are changing the way we communicate, the way we get our jobs done, and even the way we recreate. Thus, it can be said that digital technologies are changing the face of our society for the new century.
‎As a result to the social restructuring of cities and the digitization of services, the urban and physical forms of cities are in turn being reshaped. As William J. Mitchen explain in his book, City of Bits.” As our bodies morph into cyborgs, the buildings that house them are also transforming. Increasingly, telecommunication systems replace circulation systems, and the solvent of digital information decomposes traditional building types. One by one, the familiar forms vanish. Then the residue of recombinant ftagments yields up mutants.” As the new communication technologies are replacing the traditional ones, architects and urban designers need to innovate building, public places, towns and cities for the new social fabrics.
‎This thesis provides some insights into the way new technologies are affecting city structure. It introduces the information revolution, represented by the increase in the number of computer users, the appearance of the cyberspace and the virtual environment technologies, the spread of mobile technologies and the new information inftastructure system that provide a technological foundation for the rapid innovation in voice, data, image and video communication. This thesis also explains in detail the phrase ”digital city” which is considered the intangible face for the contemporary city in the cyber space. The rest of the thesis investigates the gradual transformation of cities on three levels: City planning, urban design and architecture. The thesis is concluded with an evaluation of the Egyp~ information services and the new born information communities in Egypt. Fmally recOmmendations to find an image to the contemporary information city in Egypt are presented.
