Abstract

Ascites is the most common complication of liver cirrhosis and its development is associated with worsened quality of life.
Refractory ascites which not respond to high dose of diuretics need repeated paracentesis.
Circulatory dysfunction after large- volume paracentesis is associated with a high-rate of recurrence of ascites, development of the hepatorenal syndrome or dilutional hyponatremia.
This study was designed to evaluate the importance of plasma expanders after partacentesis to decrease electrolytes disturbance.
Sixty patients with tense ascites due to liver cirrhosis were selected from those admitted to Ain Shams University Hospital, Internal Medicine department.
Twenty normal healthy volunteers were included as a control group.
All patients and control group were subjected to the following:
1- Liver enzymes (AST, ALT), Total and direct bilirubin, serum albumin, total protein and prothrombin time.
2- Complete blood count.
3- Serum urea and serum creatinine.
4- Plasma sodium and potassium.
5- Abdominal ultrasonography.
Patients only subjected to:
• Diagnostic parcentesis.
• Therapeutic paracentesis about 5 liter ascetic fluid was removed then serum electrolytes (Na, K) were be done 12 hours and 24 hrs after paracentesis.
