Abstract

The measurement of blood pressure, one of the most common and most important diagnostic procedures in medicine, is the basis for decisions related to diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of the patient. This measurement alone is the main indicator of the presence of abnormal state and the need to start therapy often for a lifetime. In order to make a correct blood pressure measurement, it is important that the equipment is calibrated.
Factors affecting nurses performance in blood pressure measurement technique are related to the patient, the nurse and the equipment that is used in measurement. The World Health Organization/International Society of Hypertension. (1983) recommended that the patient should rest at least 5 minutes before measurement, and should not cross the legs, which could give a falsely high blood pressure. If the patient is in the sitting position, a chair should be supplied with back support, also to avoid a falsely high blood pressure. The muscle of the arm should be relaxed and at heart level with the palm turned upwards. A cuff of the right breadth should be applied 2-2.5 cm above the elbow and the cuff should be inflated quickly up to 30 mmHg above palpated systolic blood pressure.
The present study aimed to identify factors affecting nurses, performance in blood pressure measurement technique .
