Abstract

Environment of earth is a closed system, hence, it is
obliging to recycle the industrial wastes, as possible, if we want to minimize the pollution. Industrial byproducts are now the main reason of pollution, due to their accumulation.
Judicious management is needed to overcome such a problem. Many research works were performed to utilize industrial by-products, in order to minimize their effect on the environment.
Metallurgical slag, arising as a by-product of metals refining processes, have found such a wide application as building materials. Copper slag was used in road making, lead slag in land filling, zinc slag as fine aggregate, nickel slag in brickmaking, and tin slag as road making material. <1>
Blastfurnace slag arising as by-product of iron manufacture, is an example of industrial by-products that have found a full use in the industry of building materials, so now it cannot be regarded as waste. There are two major uses for blastfurnace slag, and the end use determines the way in which it is processed. The slag can be tapped and allowed to air-cool, a dense material is formed and used as aggregate.Blastfurnace slag can also be granulated by rapid quenching, the resulting granules are subsequently dried and ground to a fine powder. Ground granulated blastfurnace slag has excellent cementitious properties
