Abstract

Otitis media is one of the most common infections of childhood. It becomes more common during recent years than was in the early part of this century, but it seems to be more mild and of shorter duration and less damaging to the middle ear. The aim of the study was to assess mother’s knowledge and practice regarding care of their children suffering from otitis media and design a guideline leaflet about care of otitis media. This study is a descriptive design and it was conducted at health Insurance Hospital (Nasr City). The subjects composed of 100 mothers accompanied their children with otitis media attending to the previously mentioned setting was included in the study. Children from both sex, aged 6 months to 6 years and confirmed diagnosis of otitis media. Data were collected using the following tools through a predesigned Questionnaire sheet, it was designed and prepared in an Arabic language by the researcher; after reviewing related literature, it composed of demographic characteristics of mothers, sociodemographic characteristics of children and mothers’ knowledge regarding otitis media. Findings of the current study revealed that the mean age of mothers was 28.4±6.8 year with the mean age of children 3.9±1.5. There was a significant negative correlation between total mothers’ knowledge regarding care of otitis media and their sociodemogrpahic characteristics. The findings of this study can be concluded that the majority of mothers had inadequate knowledge about care of their children with otitis media. Meanwhile, leaflets are a useful resource for information provision for the mothers included in the study subjects. Based up on the results of the current study, the researcher recommended that in service training program for mothers regarding otitis media to keep them in touch with advances in health education about care of their children with otitsi media. Development of a guideline leaflet for parents of children with otitis media is essential to upgrading their knowledge about care of children with otitis media.
