Abstract

The object of the present work is to investigate numerically the natural convection from a discrete heater in an enclosure. A mathematical model was constructed where the conservation equations governing the transfer of continuity, momentum and thermal energy together with their boundary conditions were solved using the Patanker technique.
‎The study covered a wide range of the variable parameters where the Rayleigh number was varied from 102 to 106, the aspect ratio was changed from 0.5 to 5, the position ratio was changed from 0.25 to 0.75, size ratio was changed from 0.25 to 1.0, the tilt angle from horizontal was changed from 0 to 1800 and Prandtl number was changed from 0.01 to 100.
‎The calculation grid used in the solution is investigated to determine the best grid spacing, the required number of iterations and other parameters which affect the accuracy of the generated solutions. The numerical method and computer program were tested for the case of pure conduction to assure validity and accuracy of the numerical method.
‎The results are presented graphically in the form of streamline and isotherm contour plots. The heat transfer characteristics, velocity profiles, local and average Nusselt number were also presented.
‎Correlation was developed which represent the present numerical heat transfer results with an average deviation of less than 11.5 %. The present numerical results were compared with previously published numerical data and very good agreement was noticed. Recommendations for future work related to the present investigation were also
‎given.
