Abstract

Posterior segment surgeries like scleral buckling, vitrectomy, silicone oil injection and pneumatic retinopexy, may have complications on the anterior segment of the eye.
*ANTERIOR SEGMENT COMPLICATIONS OF PNEUMATIC RETINOPEXY:
1. Elevated intraocular pressure: It is the most serious complication as it can cause central retinal artery occlusion and blindness. The central retinal artery should be monitored after gas injection by indirect ophthalmoscope. Large volume of gas can physically cause secondary angle closure glaucoma. AC paracentesis is performed if the artery remains closed for several minutes.
2. Corneal complications: The corneal endothelium damage was due to interference with nutrition resulting from the bubble preventing aqueous contact with the corneal endothelium.
3. Lens opacities: are produced by prolonged contact between air, SF6 or other gases and the posterior surface of the lens. The risk of cataract may be increased by the loss of vitreous that protect the posterior lens capsule. Feathery opacities usually disappear within one to two days after contact between the lens and the gas bubble is eliminated.
