Abstract Escherichia coli (E. coli) affects poultry industry causing major economic losses achieved by high morbidity and mortality, loss of body weight and low egg production, control of his microbe is an important for poultry industry which depend primarily on the use of certain antimicrobials such as Ca fosfomycin and florfenicol. Ca fosfomycin is active against wide range of bacteria isolated in urinary tracts infection including -lactamase producers e.g. E. coli, Proteus spp., Staphylococci and Streptococci. Florfenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is also effective in treatment of E. coli infections in poultry. The present work was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Ca fosfomycin and/or florfenicol in healthy and experimentally infected chickens with E. coli. The sensitivity of isolated E. coli strains of avian origin is investigated in vitro to different antimicrobial agents. The effect of therapeutic dose for Ca fosfomycin (40 mg/kg B.wt) and/or florfenicol (30 mg/kg B.wt) in drinking water for five successive days on healthy and experimentally infected chickens with E. coli was studied. Moreover, the effect of therapeutic dose of the drugs on haematological picture, liver and kidney function as well as histopathological changes were studied. |
