Abstract

End stage liver cell failure is a disease that can affect every system in the body. It causes cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, immunological and metabolic changes. It also caries a great risk of mortality in patients admitted to the ICU. Various devices are developed to provide extracorporeal liver support to the failing liver aiming for spontaneous recovery or as a bridge to liver transplantation. This review aims to highlight on this rising subject including artificial and bioartificial liver support systems.
Although neither these systems have proved a great efficacy in reducing mortality in these patients ongoing research efforts are made to reach that goal. Artificial liver support is claimed to be effective only in patients with alcoholic liver disease that decompensate after recent alcohol intake. Bioartificial liver support systems have scarce clinical data. Neither is recommended for routine clinical care.
