Abstract

The present thesis inciudes a new design of an on line programmed computer that processes the signal applied to and received from a newly devised left ventricular themlodilution catheter. This new; design provides a multiple measurement of the global left ventricular ejection fraction as well as other relevant systolic functions during diagnostic and therapeutic intervention catheterization using thermodilution technique. The frame work of this thesis includes seven chapters: Chapter one is a general introduction to the several noninvasive and invasive methods used for left ventricular function tests. This is followed by the an atomy of the heart and especially the left ventricle as well as the cardiac valves and the blood circulation mechanism. The aim of the thesis is also included. Chapter two discusses the features of Echocardiography as a noninvasive method for measuring the left ventric6lar systolic function, This is followed by the several acceptable invasive methods for measuring the same function. Chapter three includes the cardiac cycle mechanism according to the mechanical events on the left side of the heart. The blood mixing through the left ventricle and the blood flow in aorta are also introduced. Chapter four discusses the different dilution techniques which were devised for cardiac function study, such as the Fick method, the indicator dilution technique, and finally the thermoution technique which is applied in this study.
