Abstract

Digital sequences representing compressed video signals are very vulnerable to channel disturbances when they are transmitted through unreliable wireless channels. Several video encoding/decoding schemes have been proposed to make the compressed bitstream resilient to transmission errors. Those schemes are known as error resilience techniques.
The objective of this thesis is to improve the performance of an MPEG coded video sequence modulated using GMSK modulation technique and transmitted through a fast fading channel by using a combination of preprocessing and post-processing error resilience techniques. A simple linear block code is introduced on the compressed bitstream after interleaving and before transmission as a forward error concealment technique in order to decrease the bit error rate of coded bitstream while a proposed error concealment technique is being used at the .decoder to improve the visual quality of the received corrupted video.
Subjective and objective results are presented to show the performance of the system used. The results show that using a forward error concealment technique represented by linear block code lead to a noticeable decrease in the bit error rate of the coded bitstream. Whereas the proposed error concealment technique shows a satisfactory visual quality with media implementation complexity.
