Abstract

The present work deals with exploring the possibility of using drag reducing polymers as corrosion inhibitors. Drag reducing polymers are used in practice to reduce the friction between turbulently flowing fluids and the containing conduit, they act by damping the eddies at the interface between the fluid and the conduit wall. The phenomenon has an important economic value as it leads to reducing the pumping power requirement with a corresponding reduction in the operating costs of the system. Metallic corrosion is a heterogeneous reaction, its kinetic is determined by two processes, a mass transfer process and a charge transfer process. To evaluate the corrosion inhibiting properties of drag reducing polymers, two types of study were made:
(1) The effect of polymer addition on the rate of mass transfer.
(2) The effect of polymer addition on the rate of charge
transfer.
The effect of polymer addition on the rate of mass transfer
was studied by measuring the limiting current for the systems:
(a) The cathodic reduction of K.,Fe(CN)/- from alkaline solution at nickel electrode.
