Abstract
Macular edema is an important cause of diminution of vision in patients with diabetes mellitus and occurs in approximately 10% of the diabetic population. Information on the incidence of macular edema is very important for care delivery and possible prevention.
The study was carried out on 100 eyes of 58 diabetic patients having macular edema presented to the outpatient clinic of Alexandria Main University Hospital to find out the association of macular edema with different stages of diabetic retinopathy.
Each patient was subjected to the followings:
1- History taking with special emphasis on the age of discovery of diabetes, the type of diabetes, the duration and treatment of diabetes. Also if there were other general and eye diseases.
2- Complete ophthalmological examination including the best corrected visual acuity, slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment of the eye, intraocular pressure measurement and fundus biomicroscopy.
3- Color fundus photography and fluorescein angiography using (CF-60 UV Canon fundus camera) through a widely dilated pupil.
4- Fasting blood sugar and the glycosylated hemoglobin.
In this study we have observed some important facts: 1) Females were more commonly affected than males in both type I and type II diabetes.
