Abstract

Wadi El-Qamar is located in El-Max industrial area in the West district of Alexandria Governorate. Wadi El-Qamar covers an area of about 185.000 square meters (about 44 feddan), with a residence of about 15936 in 1996, and would have reached about 21000 by 1996. The establishment of this residential area has began in the early 1950s, with the industrial development of the area, as workers recruited by established industries started to establish their own houses, in unplanned manner, nearby their work places.
The area could be considered to be one of the most polluted areas in Alexandria. The concentration of dust was found to have reached as much ten folds (1000 Mg/m3) or more in some years. This means that the observed concentration of dust exceeds WHO guidelines (180 Mg/m3) and the Egyptian Low no.4, 1994 (230 day,90 anuual Mg/m3). Moreover, the odour
