Abstract

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a complex condition with distinctive symptoms and signs resulting from renal insufficiency.Among the most important manifestations of uremic syndrome are the neurologic manifestations which could be central or peripheral. Peripheral neuropathy in CRF could be polyneuropathy or mononeuropathy. Carpal tunnel syndrome was the most common mononeuropathy affecting patients with chronic renal failure on haemodialysis. The present work was designed to evaluate the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome and posterior tibia nerve entrapment neuropathy in patients with CRF on haemodialysis, and to clarify the possible relation between the occurrence of CTS and the presence of arteriole-venous fistula.
The study was carried out on 20 patients with CRF on haemodialysis. The patients group was divided into 2 subgroups; <5 years (10 patients) and > 5 years (10 patients). In addition another 10 healthy persons matching the same age and sex of the patients were used in this study as a control group .
