Abstract Burkholderia pseudomallei is small, motile aerobic gram negative bacilli. Melioidosis infection, caused by B. pseudomallei, is known to be endemic in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Infection in humans is acquired by soil contamination through skin abrasions or wounds or by ingestion and inhalation. Burkholderia mallei is small, non-motile, non-pigmented aerobic gram negative bacilli. It causes glanders, which is a zoonotic disease of equines that may be occasionally transmitted to humans or other animals (sheep, goats, dogs and cats). Burkholderia gladioli is a small, motile aerobic gram negative bacilli, a phytopathogen causing a leaf and corn disease of gladioli and other flowers. It has been associated with human pulmonary infection as chronic granulomatous disease and cystic fibrosis. It can be diagnosed by species-specific PCR. |
