Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the role of Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in the assessment of conservative medical treatment of ectopic pregnancy with single dose of methotrexate.
Patients & methods: This study was carried out in casualty and outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The study included 15 pregnant patients with undisturbed ectopic pregnancy at time of presentation who were managed by conservative medical treatment with single dose of methotrexate.
Results: After follow up of these patients, it was found that ectopic pregnancy was resolved in 8 patients (resolved group). The remaining 7 patients needed surgical interference (surgical group). Regarding CPK level, there was no significant statistical difference between CPK level at 1st day, 4th day and after 7th day in resolved group (There was no specific changing pattern in CPK). Also on measuring CPK level in resolved group and surgical group at different timing, there was no significant statistical difference between surgical and resolved groups as regards the mean CPK level on 1st and 4th day (P>0.05). However there was a significant statistical lower mean CPK level in resolved group when compared to surgical group on 7th day of follow up (P<0.05).
Conclusion: CPK level has no significant prognostic value in predicting success of methotrxate in treatment of ectopic pregnancy.
