Health care associated infections (HAIs) are a significant public health
problem till today. This study was done to Informing stakeholders of El
Mansoura fever hospital (MFH) about the optimal nosocomial infections’
prevention and control activities which are necessary for adopting strategies
to contain such infections.
Quantitative as well as qualitative techniques were used to collect the
required data. Quantitative data was collected by a close ended precoded
questionnaire from all health care workers in MFH and focused observational
checklist. Qualitative data was obtained from the director general of infection
control department at Ministry of Health and Population, Governorate level,
infection control committee director & infection control team at the hospital,
unstructured observation and walk through the hospital, Review of the
documents and the health information system of the hospital focus group
discussions with patients, companions and visitors .
IC program has started since June 2006 and since that IC committee and
team were established. The program is suffering from low budget and high
resistance from the stuff. All stuff members had unsatisfactory level of
knowledge and compliance of to IC practices. There is no referral system
adjusting the attendance of the patients to the hospital so there is large
number of patients attending the outpatient. Patients, accompanies and
visitors had poor knowledge about hospital acquired infections.
Infection control program in El Mansoura fever hospital has many strengths
and opportunities, but still has weakness and threats to be remedied.
