Abstract In this study ,the effects of age on peripheral nerve regeneration following sciatic nerve crush was investigated. 80albino rats were used and divided in to 4 experimental groups: neonates, young adult and old age group. Each group contain 20 rats, 15 from each group were subjected to nerve crushing in their right limb while the remaining five of each group remain without surgical interference to be used as a control . estimation of the number of myelinated nerve fiber was done after one , three and ten months after crush. Five rats from each group were scarified at each assessment point and the sciatic nerve segment of the operated side was removed. The segment removed was fixed by immersion in a mixture of 1% paraformaldhyde and 1.25% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M phosphate buffer for 2-3 days then post-fixed in 4% osmium tetroxide for 2 hours , then dehydrated through a graded series of ethanol 70%, 90% and absolute. |
