Abstract

Vanadium is a heavy metal and trace element may be believed
as a novel anticarcinogenic agent, helping in protection against
chemical cancer induction by DMBA which cause adenocarcinoma
in female-albino rats.
One hundred and five female rats were divided into four gps.
Gp.(1) of IS rats was the negative control, gp.(2) of 30 rats was
orally intubated by vanadium pentoxide (O.OSmg/kg B.WtI1S0 days
orally), gp.(3) of 30 rats was orally given DMBA(100mg/kg B.Wt,
the dose divided into 4 weekly applications orally, dissolved in corn
oil) after one month from the beginning of the experiment and
gp.( 4) of 30 rats was cotreated with vanadium (O.OSmg/kg
B.WtI1S0 days orally), then after one month DMBA was given as 4
weekly applications orally, dissolved in corn oil with continuous
administration of V.
Blood samples were collected from the retro orbital venous
plexus for hematological and biochemical studies at 90, 120 and
ISO days from the beginning of the experiment. Tissue specimens
were taken at the same time from the liver, kidneys, lungs, spleen,
mammary gland, oviduct and ovaries for histopathological
examination after sacrifaction of the rats.
The rats appeared healthy in all groups but after the onset of
oral intubation of DMBA, rats became dull, emaciated and easily
detached hair especially in the last four weeks of the study in gp.(3).
In Group (4) received concomitant doses of vanadium and DMBA
showed mild signs of illness in the last 30 days of the experiment
