Abstract

The purpose of this work was to study the age-related changes in the brain of healthy elderly volunteers which include: Widening of sulci, dilatation of ventricular system and changes of signal intensity in the white matter and basal ganglia. The study conducted on thirty healthy elderly volunteers, their ages ranged from 50 - 70 years, 17 were males and 13 were females. All subjects had MR1 examination of the brain in axial, coronal and sagittal scans using To, T2 and FLAIR pulse sequences. It was found that widening of sluice and dilatation of ventricular systems was significantly associated with increasing age. On the other hand, many elderly subjects showed no evidence of widening of sluice and dilatation of ventricular systems. It was found that changes of signal intensity of white matter and basal ganglia were significantly associated with increasing age and grading from mild to severe, the most age group was group IV .
