Abstract

This thesis deals with the subject of the design and the analysis of the buoy systems. The perusal of the available publications about this subject has shown that, the design and construction of the buoy systems are confidential process to each company, and there is no an integral published method for the design and analysis of the buoy systems~
‎This thesis is an attempt to establish scientific and practical concepts for the design procedures of the buoy system. The study is started with the definition of the different types of buoys and their uses. The first main part of this thesis is the study of the methods used to evaluate the environmental conditions and the design parameters, and then the forces ICting on the buoy system components, and the design considerations of each component.
‎In the second part of this thesis, the static analysis methods of the mooring line of the buoy system have been studied, especially the numerical analysis methods. A suitable static analysis method (which takes into account the elastic properties of the mooring line and the variance of the current velocity with the depth of water) is selected to calculate the geometrical parameters of the mooring line. The geometrical perameters of the mooring line are the length of the mooring line, the mooring line diameter, excursion, and the tension along the mooring line. A computer program for calculation of the load acting on the floating buoy, and mooring line analysis, based on the selected method, is p:esented. This program is prepared by FORTRAN language. The appraisal of the validity and performance of the computer program have been achieved through two case studies and comparing their results with the results of the modified canetary force-deflection relationship. ‎. comperison demonstrates a good agreement between the results of the two methods.
‎In the final part, some instructions on the design of mooring line components, by !ALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities), are presented. An empirical method for calculation of the length of the mooring line and the load acting on the buoy, by !ALA, has been proposed. This method is useful in the preliminary design stage.
