Abstract
This prospective, randomized clinical study was conducted between January 2007 and February 2008. Seventy-five healthy term infants (41 girls) aged from 0 to 1 month were recruited from health care centers and from those infants presented to the outpatient clinic of El-Galaa Teaching Hospital for regular follow up. Subjects were randomized into two treatments groups: probiotic-group (n = 50) and control-group (n =25).
At the beginning of the study and monthly thereafter up to 4 months of age, the infants were clinically examined and their weight, length and occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) were measured. One faecal sample, at the end of the study, was obtained from all infants included in the study. Defecation frequency per 24 was reported during every visit i.e. monthly. Every day the mother recorded the daily consumption of formula and defecation frequency. The faecal samples were examined for Identification of L. acidophilus and L. rhamnosus by real time PCR and enumeration of viable lactobacilli.
