Abstract

Stroke remains the third leading cause of death in the world and the major cause of adult disability. At many community hospitals, a formal stroke team or neurologist may not be available, MR-based technology is unlikely to become widely available for most patients presenting to nonacademic facilities with acute stroke syndromes. Thus, an additional benefit of obtaining a panel of markers might be useful to help stroke patients.
This study represents one of the studies to detect a rapid, objective, clinically accurate, available diagnostic and prognostic tool for diagnosis of stroke patients. Moreover, the correlation of serum NSE levels with both: severity of the consequent neurological insult graded by National Institute of Health stroke scale (NIHSS) and functional outcome by using Barthel Index (BI) for disability were evaluated.
The study prospectively included 60 patients with first ever ischemic cerebrovascular stroke who were admitted to Ain Shams University Hospital within 48 hours from stroke onset, without any past history suggestive of brain lesion or any radiological evidence of previous cerebrovascular insult and they were matched with 20 healthy blood donor in age and sex. All the patients were subjected to full clinical history and examination, MRI, Carotid duplex and routine laboratory investigations. Patients neurological status was assessed via (NIHSS) which was done on admission and their functional status was assessed via (BI) for activity of daily living after 2 weeks from stroke onset. A venous blood sample was taken within the first 48 hours of stroke onset, and assayed for random blood glucose, lipid profile and NSE.
