- STUDY PROBLEM:
The problem of the present study was crystallized in the following five questions:
1- What is the concept of school culture, its levels and its functions?
2- What are the distinguished aspects and characteristics of school culture?
3- What is the philosophy of school culture and its objectives in the second cycle of basic education stage?
4- What is the impact of school culture on practicing the school free activities?
5- What is the role of school activity in supporting school culture?
- STUDY OBJECTIVES:
1. Investigating the impact of dominant culture inside school society on practicing school activity.
2. Tackling the role of school activity in supporting school culture.
- STUDY METHODS:
The ethnographic research method has been used in the present study because it was the most suitable one.
- STUDY LIMITATIONS:
This study limited itself to two schools in the second cycle of basic education stage in Qalubia Governorate. They are under the supervision of Benha Educational Administration. They are 15th May Prep School for Girls (governmental school) and Al-Fath Private School. It limited also to free social and cultural activity at these two schools. The filed study was carried out in the school year 2006-2007.
- STUDY STEPS:
- First: The general framework of the study: Introduction, problem, questions, objectives, significance, limitations, method, tools, and terms.
- Second: School Culture: The concept of culture, the concept of school culture and its functions, objectives, characteristics and other related concepts.
- Third: School Activity: Its concept in the prep stage, its historical development, objectives, standards and fields.
- Fourth: Field Study: Introduction on the ethnographic research method, its characteristics, historical development of its use in education, its steps and application in the field study.
- Fifth: School Community: It includes the ecological description of school, school culture as reflected in the field study in two selected schools.
- STUDY RESULTS:
The following are some of results reached present study:
** Positive Aspects in Al-Fath Private School:
• The objectives were stated and displayed clearly for all school personnel in the school.
• The follow-up of pupils’ progress continually.
• The encouragement of positive values such as: cooperation, taking responsibility and self-confidence.
** Positive Aspects in 15th May Prep School for Girls:
• Interest of pupils’ social problems.
• Support of pupils’ achievement and progress.
• Encouragement of connection to out-school environment.
• Support of human relations among the pupils and teachers.
• The follow-up of pupils’ progress.
** Negative Aspects in Al-Fath Private School:
• School culture is the dominant one inside the school.
• Teachers do not feel emotional security.
• The school principal is dictator.
** Negative Aspects in 15th May Prep School for Girls:
• No clear objectives for personnel in the school concerning school culture.
• No commitment of time to some extent.
• Conflict between teachers because of private lessons.
• There is no interest of school cleanliness.
** Impact of school culture on practicing free activities:
• Administration pattern affects the selection of school activity teachers.
• School culture affects the finance of school free activities.
