Abstract

have pulmonary TB on the base of WHO criteria (1996), only 30 patients
were confirmed to have pulmonary TB by various laboratory aids and chest
radiographic study. These 30 patients, represented patients group, started
antituberculous therapy (Isoniazid, Rifampin and Pyrazinamide) in
therapeutic doses for 9-12 months. On the other hand, 10 healthy children
age matched with patients group, free from any respiratory illness and with
no relevant history of TB were considered the control group. All subjects
included in the study were subjected to full history taking, thorough clinical
examination, chest radiographs (patients group only) and diagnostic
laboratory procedures; CBC and acute phase reactants (for both groups and
after 6 months after starting therapy in patient group), tuberculin skin
testing (for both groups at time of diagnosis), Z-N smear and culture of
sputum or gastric aspirate (for patients group only at time of diagnosis)
and PCR (for both groups at the time of diagnosis and after 6 months of
starting therapy). Estimation of urinary neopterin was determined in both
groups and after 6 months of starting therapy in patients group.
from the statistical analysis of our collected data, our study revealed that:
The mean age of our studied patients group was 7.51 ± 2.96 years with
more male preponderance.
63.3% of patients gave history of BCG vaccination while 36.7% gave
family history of TB and 30% gave history of contact with tuberculous
adults.
The most common clinical presentation in patients group was cough
(76.6%) while the least common presentation was haemoptysis
(6.6%).
