Abstract

The hiotogenesis of the miicosae of the proventri— czlar compartments and the abomasum of nine Egyptian water buffalo CBos bubalus 11.) fetuses ranging frem 9 73 cm CR11 and of one suckling calf was studied. The primor4ia of tha umina1 papillae are firstly seen at CR11 17 cm fetus as wnaU humps of aggregated cells in the basal zone of the 11emina epithelialis followed by the evagination of the latter and, the underlying Lemma pz’opria mucosae into the superficial zone making papillary bodies of various. sizes. With further increase of age the developing papillary bodies approach the liiminal eurface with the loss of the latter to its even appearance. In the fetus With 73 cm CR11 the luininal sur:tace shows furrows which partially separate the tips of the papillary bodies from the mass of epitheliiun. After birth the ruminal papillae are short, denaely packed and do not appear as separate entities. The oorai fication starts in some cells in the superficial zone in the fetus with 27 cm CR11 and continues in the prenatal life without making a definite layer. After birth the Stratum cornewn js made up of flattened comified cells which are especially concentr.ated on the tips of the ruminal papillae. The primordia of the retioular crests are firstly observed in the fetus with 16 cm CR11 as evaginations.
