Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Hyaluronan application with periodontal surgery. Twenty seven patients with interproximal osseous defects were included in the current study. The selected subjects had two similar interproximal defects with probing depth > 5mm following initial therapy. Smokers and medically compromised patients were excluded from the current study. Initial therapy consisted of supragingival scaling, root planing and oral hygiene instructions. Following the initial therapy, a re-evaluation of the interproximal sites with a probing depth > 5mm was performed to confirm the indication for periodontal surgery. The defects in each patient were randomly assigned to be treated either with full thickness mucoperiosteal flap alone or in conjunction with Hyaluronan gel (0.8%). Standardized periapical radiographs were taken prior to the surgery, 3 and 6 months postoperatively, by paralleling technique using the Digora system for each patient. Intra-oral clinical photographs were taken for documentation at the time of surgery, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. |
